In a significant move in the domain registration landscape, website building giant Squarespace has announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire all domain name registrations and related customer accounts from Google Domains. Here’s everything you need to know about this upcoming transition.
What Happens Now?
For the time being, customers don’t need to take any action. Your domain will continue to be managed by Google until it is time for the migration to Squarespace. This migration process will only begin after the transaction between Squarespace and Google Domains officially closes.
The Transition Phase
Squarespace and Google are committed to ensuring that this transition is as seamless as possible for customers. For a limited period post-close until accounts are migrated to Squarespace, they will be managed by Squarespace but utilizing Google’s infrastructure.
Your Data and Privacy
Upon the closing of the transaction, your domain account will be owned by Squarespace, but you will continue to manage your domain(s) via Google Domains as you do today, with Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service continuing to apply. When the migration starts – expected to be at least 30 days from now – your customer and billing data will be governed by Squarespace’s Privacy Policy, and Squarespace’s Terms of Service will apply.
Google Cloud DNS
Squarespace has publicly committed to continuing to utilize Google Cloud DNS infrastructure, meaning that the reliability and performance concerning DNS will remain unchanged during this migration.
Google Workspace Subscriptions
If you currently have a Google Workspace subscription billed by Google Domains, the billing and support services for such subscription will also transition to Squarespace.
Domain Transfer Options
It is important to note that customers will retain the ability to transfer their domain(s) to another registrar either before or after the migration.
Timing and Next Steps
While the exact timing remains uncertain and is subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions, customers will be notified once their domain has moved to Squarespace.
For any inquiries or assistance needed during this transition, customers are advised to reach out to Google’s support channels.
This acquisition marks a significant step for Squarespace in becoming a more comprehensive web service provider and illustrates the company’s ambitions beyond website building.
Stay tuned for more updates as the process unfolds.
